As we age, our skin can develop dark spots, sometimes called age spots, sun spots, or liver spots. Some of these spots are actually a result of skin damage that occurred from sun damage earlier in life. They can show up years later, even if you’ve avoided the sun for a long time. There are a number of ways to avoid getting age spots and freckles and also how to get rid of freckles permanently. To prevent dark spots and freckles, you have to be very careful with exposing your skin to the sun, so when ever it’s possible try to stay out of the sun and keep a sun screen on.

Lighter skinned individuals have a tendency to hyper-pigment and have the melanocytes within the cells overproduce melanin and lead to discolorations and freckling.

Before you use any products or treatments, it is always a good idea to check with your doctor first for the best option for you. Your doctor may prescribe a Vitamin A cream, such as Retin-A or Renova. You can also purchase over the counter fade creams that are not prescription strength. Skin peels, exfoliation and microdermabrasion are all effective ways to lighten dark spots on your skin and get rid of freckles. Your doctor may recommend laser surgery as well. Remember, to remove freckles and lighten dark spots on skin, use microdermabrasion, exfoliation, skin peels or check with your doctor for prescription and treatments.

If you have got a darker skin tone, you have to be really careful when you are trying to lighten your skin, or get rid of freckles, because what can actually happen if you use products that are too aggressive,  or too abrasive, you can actually cause the skin to hypo-pigment, which basically means the skin is going to stop producing melanin in that area, because people with the darker skin can have their melanocytes hypo-pigment and stop producing melanin, which will going to leave a white spots.

So for dark skin individuals I would recommend using a hydroquinone free brightening gel, , which is basically just has a liquorice extract in it. Azalea, azaleic acid, cogic acid. These are all botanical brighteners that are going to help to lighten any discolorations and make the skin look lighter and more even.
